The Difference Between UTP, Stranded, Solid and Patch Cables

Running cable out for a network operations centre is a challenge; you have a variety of cable types for different needs. When it comes to the physical construction of the cables, there are four basic types to consider.

First, nearly all of these cable types are some variety of "unshielded twisted pair" or UTP cable; this refers to two twisted pairs of comer conductors, wrapped up in a polyurethane cladding. UTP uses several properties of electromagnetic propagation to send signals, by varying the voltages on the cables differentially. There are other types of cables (fibre optic, and shielded cable are two), but unless you need their specific benefits, twisted pair copper is the most cost effective. (Fibre optic offers more bandwidth, but is significantly more expensive, and somewhat more fragile, shielded cabling adds expense, but not performance, and is mostly used in places where the electromagnetic transmissions from networking cables can cause problems.)

HDMI Cable

Of twisted pair copper cables, there are a couple of subtypes. Stranded is the most common type - if you plug a network or Ethernet cable from your router to a computer, this is the likeliest type. It's made up of strands of copper wound together in an insulator; over longer distances, it loses its signal carrying capacity, it has the advantage of being less expensive and flexible and finally it's easier to torque or bend stranded cable to meet a particular requirement.

Solid cable uses one larger wire in each insulating run; it has significant electrical performance issues, meaning it will in this context transmit data further with fewer losses. Most of the dedicated wiring in buildings that have network wiring built in is using solid cable. If you've ever had to pull stiff cable through walls or a drop ceiling, this is the cable type you've had hands on experience with.

If you've heard of CAT5 cable (or CAT3, or CAT5a) and had someone selling you CAT6 or CAT7, you're seeing one of the major differences between stranded and solid cable right there - transmission distances. Transmission distance for a cable goes up with the capability of the cable to carry electricity - thicker cabling carries electricity with fewer losses over a given distance; better insulation also improves transmission distances. While running multiple cables together (like stranded cable does) can approximate what solid cable does, it's not as effective or robust, though flexibility and reduced expense are good benefits.

CAT 6 cable is CAT5 cable with better shielding and a thicker wire; CAT 5a is CAT5 cable with the same shielding as CAT6. CAT7 cable is rated to a thousand meters (one kilometre!) and is thicker still and has higher end insulators. Note that neither CAT6 or CAT7 are actual recognized standards - this sort of cabling is, like 'draft-n' wireless, something where the hardware vendors are making a product in advance of the actual standard being finalized, though parts of it have been released.

Both CAT6 and CAT7 cables are considerably stiffer, and harder to run around corners, as you might expect and they are more expensive.

The appropriate question is "What sort of cabling do I actually need for this project?" You can save considerable expense by only using the actual cabling you need, rather than just running CAT7 cabling for a bunch of 10-meter lengths where it offers no benefit over cheaper runs.

How to Guide - Connecting Your Laptop to HDTV Or TV

I'm writing this guide after being asked a few times on ways to connect a laptop to a TV. People want to achieve this for several reasons. First, it's great for presentations at work, school, or home. It's also convenient for viewing pictures and videos to friends, watching DVDs, and it is now even being used for viewing Blu-ray and other high definition content on the HDTV.

First, we want to make sure you're getting the most out of your laptop when it comes to displaying it on the TV.

HDMI Cable

If you have an HDTV with HDMI inputs, check if your laptop has an HDMI output. If it does, you're in luck! Your HDTV can display from your laptop in HD resolutions. All you need is an HDMI cable to connect them. If your HDTVs HDMI inputs are used up already. An HDMI switch would be the best solution for you. We supply switches that can connect up to 5 different HDMI sources to 1 HDMI input. If you don't have an HDMI output on the laptop, check if it has a DVI output. Some ASUS, and Dell laptops have them. If you do, you can connect your laptop to an HDTV with an HDMI to DVI cable. They are both digital cables so this will produce the same HD resolutions as a standard HDMI cable. If your laptop doesn't have HDMI or DVI out, it should have a VGA output. Connecting with VGA is capable of high resolutions. However, different TVs support different resolutions with VGA. You must check the maximum resolution your TV model supports with VGA. Pretty much all laptops come with an S-Video output. It's not going to be as great of a picture, but it will certainly do the job with an S-Video cable.

After you have connected your chosen cable, boot up your laptop and see if it has detected your TV. If not, you have to go into your display properties and look for the settings that will enable your TV to display from your laptop. Where to find the setting will vary depending on your graphics card (just look around). If you are having trouble getting your TV to show a picture, make sure you have updated the display drivers on your laptop. Now you're probably going to want sound from something other than your laptop speakers. So you can choose to output it to your TV, or blast it from your home theater audio receiver.

The best way to connect audio to your TV or receiver is through a digital audio cable. Both a digital coaxial cable or Toslink optical audio cable will work great for crisp high quality audio. Just make sure your laptop has either a digital coaxial or an optical audio output. Some laptops use the headphone jack to double as a digital coaxial (S/PDIF) output. If you use this method, your going to need a 3.5mm to RCA adapter with a digital coaxial cable. If your laptop has none of these outputs and you still really want that high quality sound. Don't worry! You can still get an external (USB) sound card that has digital coaxial out or optical out. I recommend the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 SB1090 with Toslink Optical audio out. Another way, which won't require any add-ons, is to use the headphone (3.5mm) jack on your laptop to the RCA (red and white) inputs on your TV or receiver. To do this, all you need is a 3.5mm to 2 RCA adapter with a 2 RCA audio cable.

I know all of these cables can seem confusing to you. If you're having trouble finding out what each cable looks like or find out more about a cable, check out the Cable Guide at CableTrain.com. All of these cables are available for you on our website as well. I hope you can now successfully connect your laptop to the TV in the best way possible!

The Right Way to Set Up Your New Blu-ray Player

After having just gotten your new Blu-ray DVD Player, you will obviously be excited about testing it out. No doubt you will be anxious to see the glorious 1080p picture and High Definition sound quality. So the question is this: how to set up your new Blu-ray player to get the highest possible performance from it? Will it be as simple as connecting your DVD player? Will it be a breeze?

Not exactly!

HDMI Cable

When setting up your new Blu-ray player you have to keep in mind, this is a rather new technology, therefore over the past few years TVs and AV receivers have been adapting to conform to this new format. Unfortunately, you may discover not all of them can support every new feature of your Blu-ray player. This may make the process a little more difficult than setting up your standard DVD player. So I have outlined a few procedures and possible difficulties you might come across so that you can more easily incorporate your new Blu-ray player into your home entertainment system, hopefully without too much frustration.

Basically to get the best performance out of your Blu-ray player you need to understand three features: Picture, Sound, and Internet Connectivity. You will discover all three can be easily done with some simple cable connections; no fine-tuning necessary, just some simple modifications to the set-up menus maybe all that is required. Hopefully this advice will cut out any confusion and the whole process will go very smoothly for you.

Picture

1080p High Definition picture quality - this is why most people purchase their first Blu-ray Player and it is the best feature of any Blu-ray player. Blu-ray movies are stored on a disc in 1080p at 24 frames-per-second so you often see this referred to as 1080/24p. The director filmed the movie at this rate, so Blu-ray discs allow you to view the movie as it was originally meant to be seen. Blu-ray players allow you to watch these HD movies by connecting it's HDMI output to the duplicate input on your TV, so a HDMI cable will need to be purchased if one is not included with the Blu-ray player. In most cases a HDMI is not provided. HDMI cables can run anywhere from to 0. (Some argue there is no difference in HDMI cables, no matter what the cost.)

Not all Blu-ray players are capable of this 1080/24p output rate. These players will be older, and instead of the 1080/24p output rate they convert the signal to 1080/60p using a method called "3:2 pulldown' technique. What this simply means is one frame is played three times and the next frame is played twice and so forth. This results in one frame being shown on the TV screen slightly longer than the other. This produces judder into the picture, a slight moving or shaking of the picture.

To avoid this problem, a simple solution would be to purchase a newer model Blu-ray player. Most of the latest models can output 1080p pictures at 24 frames-per-second via HDMI. Also, your TV set must be able to support it. If it does not, then if you feed a signal of 1080/24p into a TV which can not support it, the TV will convert the signal to 50 or even 60HZ. This will also place judder into the picture.

What this all comes down to is to get the best, purest and most genuine High Definition picture possible, you require a Blu-ray Player capable of a 1080/24p output signal (this is easily selected on the set-up menu) and a TV capable of supporting this signal. Most of the newer LCD and Plasma televisions will give you the right support you need. LCD sets usually have a 120Hz mode, where each of the 24 frames is repeated five times and shown on the screen for the same amount of time, producing no juddering. Plasma usually has 72Hz 3:3 pulldown mode and they can use this because they do not have as much slowdown as the LCD.

Sound

The second feature most people purchase the Blu-ray for is the perfect sound quality. Blu-ray has the superior 'lossless' Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio. What you get with these audio formats is 100 percent identical to the original studio master track. This is a clear advantage over DVDs which use Dolby Digital and DTS, but again as with the picture signal, not all AV receivers are capable of decoding the newer High Definition formats.

Set up is fairly easy if your receiver can decode the formats because both HD formats can be used via the Blu-ray player's HDMI output port and the HDMI input port on the receiver. This allows a bitstream (meaning raw digital data) to be transferred to your AV receiver where it is decoded into multichannel sound. All you need to do is set your Blu-ray player's HDMI output to bitstream or primary. The HDMI ports on these devices must be specified as version 1.3/1.3a/1.3b. These are the only versions that allow for the transmitting of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Audio. You will also need a Second HDMI Cable to connect the AV receiver's HDMI output to your TV's HDMI input. The AV receiver will decode the audio and transmit the 1080/24p video signal.

Things can get a little trickier if your AV receiver does not decode the HD audio formats. However, it does not mean you can not still enjoy the great high quality sound. One option available to you is to set up your Blu-ray player to internally decode the audio and convert it to LPCM (an uncompressed form of audio). This option is located in the set-up menu and found on almost every Blu-ray player. LCPM can be transferred over any version of HDMI and it preserves the high multichannel sound quality of both Dolby True HD and DTS HD. This way your receiver does not have to do any decoding. (Take note that some lesser Blu-ray players will only convert 5.1 Dolby Digital or DTS into LPCM.)

This LCPM option assumes your AV receiver has HDMI inputs. If it does not have these HDMI inputs, then your best option is to look for Blu-ray Players that can decode the HD sound formats into high quality analogue and output them from multichannel outputs. Using optical or coaxial outputs which are usually found on most players can not be used because the do not have the sufficient bandwidth capabilities to transmit Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Audio.

Internet Connectivity

Most newer Blu-ray players have a feature called BD Live which allows you to download content from the internet, play games online and participate in web chats. To use this feature you need a Blu-ray player with a Profile 2.0 since these Blu-ray players have an Ethernet port you can use to connect to an internet router or computer. (Profile 1.1 may have an Ethernet port but WILL NOT SUPPORT BD LIVE.)

Also, you may need a USB flash memory drive or SD card to plug into your Blu-ray player. This provides digital storage for updates and extra data. It's recommended that the drive or card be at least 1 GB. Other than the Playstation 3, no other Blu-ray players on the market have internal memory built-in, but some newer Blu-ray players are now unveiling Wi-Fi, eliminating the need for external storage.

Conclusion

Hopefully, by checking all three factors discussed above - Picture, Sound, and Internet Connectivity - will make setting up your new Blu-ray player a lot easier. Just follow all the steps and you will get the best picture and sound quality that only a Blu-ray system can deliver. Happy viewing!

Flat Or Round HDMI Cable For Your Home Theater?

Just when you thought it was safe to go out and buy an HDMI cable, you now have to consider a new and interesting concept; flat HDMI cable. What in the world were the manufacturers thinking when they came up with that idea? I thought all cables are supposed to be round.

There are a few advantages to using flat HDMI, but in my opinion, these advantages have nothing to do with the quality of video. I have used both flat and round HDMI cables in many installations and compared them side-by-side. I have never seen a difference in picture quality. I have asked other installers that I work with to also compare the flat against the round and they agree with my comparison. Visually we cannot see any difference in picture quality between the two cables.

HDMI Cable

Of course the hard-core home theater buffs will disagree with me and say that a flat HDMI cable will give you better video quality. There is a theory that states a round HDMI cable has internal wires that are wrapped around each other, where the flat one separates each internal wire across the width of the cable. This is supposed to eliminate the "crosstalk" (interference) that you may experience in the round cable. The flat HDMI may eliminate this "crosstalk", but visually, it sure doesn't make much difference in picture quality.

The biggest advantage to using a flat HDMI cable is convenience. It is easier to work with and I use it when my installations don't afford me a lot of room to move around.

Here are a few advantages to using a flat HDMI cable:

It bends easier. A round HDMI cable is thicker and cannot bend as easily as a flat one. This makes it easier to install into/along walls. It's easier to tuck behind a hanging HDTV. A round HDMI cannot be wrapped up as tight as a flat one can, and will tend to bulge from behind the television. You can hide it behind a baseboard better. It lays flat against the wall and this lets you put the baseboard back flush without gaps. Running it under carpet is easier. Just make sure you don't put it in under the carpet in a high traffic area. This is something that installers are doing these days since the cable with not cause a bump in your carpet. It can be painted easier than a round one can. This is a huge advantage if you decide to run your flat HDMI along the top of your baseboards and paint it to blend into the wall.

So the flat HDMI cable will function just as well as the round one will (maybe even better if you believe in the "crosstalk" theory), and as long as it is certified by the HDMI committee, you should consider buying the flat HDMI cable because of convenience, not video quality.

Do you already have a 1080p HDTV? Many Xbox 360 players do, but most still struggle with the decision on whether to go with the HD composite cables or the HDMI cable. When it comes to getting the absolute best video quality, choosing the wrong cables will ever so slightly decrease your video quality. So which cables system results in the higher video quality? Well, before I answer that question, I want to briefly explain what the HDMI and HD composite cables are.

HDMI Cable

The HDMI Cable stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface and it's a singular cable that incubuses all video and audio components. The HD composite cables (officially known as component video cables) are a bunch of cables, usually color coordinated, that transfers digital signals from the source to the television. Which is better to use? Personally, the HDMI cable is the better choice because there's less wiring you'll have to deal and the HDMI was specifically created to transfer very large, uncompressed streams of data without any problems.

The two reasons why I didn't choose the HD composite cable is because the HD composite cables weren't designed quite like the HDMI cable to handle large, uncompressed digital signals and the HD composite cables are too cumbersome. There are five individual connectors that you have to plug into your television; two are the audio connectors and three are the component video connectors. With so many connections that must be made, the HDMI cable with its single connection begins to look superior. But ultimately, it all comes down to the video quality. Which cable produces the better video quality? Honesty, there is little to no difference. If one is better than another, the HDMI would be the victor. But in the very end, either one will be more than enough to for you to enjoy your high definition gaming experience.

How to Conceal Wall Mounted Flat Screen TV Wires and Cables During Installation

A Flat screen TV mounted on the wall is a pleasing sight. Along with better picture and sound quality a flat screen LCD or plasma TV also adds to the aesthetic ambiance of any room. However, power cables and wires dangling and lying around spoil the picture of perfection that a Flat screen TV provides.

What are the different options?

HDMI Cable

There are several ways by which you can conceal the power cables. A simple option is to hide the wires behind furniture like wall cabinets and curtains, while a more permanent option is to conceal the wires in the walls behind the flat screen TV wall mount. The latter option needs pre-existing power outlets especially if the walls are solid. In case of dry or wooden partition walls, a bit of drilling and cutting will enable you to hide cables effectively while installing your flat screen TV wall mount.

Can I skip the drilling and cutting?

An increasingly popular option used today is to hide the wires in decorative moldings which look good while blending easily with the wall. This involves less of drilling and can be done quickly within an hour or so. The decorative moldings or raceways as they are also known can be painted to match the wall color.

What are the standard guidelines to be followed?

If you opt for concealing the wires in the wall there are a few things you would need to keep in mind. First of all it would be better not to run the wires through an exterior wall which involves difficulty in drilling due to extra bracing and insulation. You will also need to select heat and fire resistant HDMI Cables as per local standards.

Also do not run power cables through the walls, which is a violation of safety codes; only the TV AV cables can be passed through. You can also cut a hole in the wall and pass the TV cable to be connected to a power socket behind the wall at the other end.

How do I run the TV cables through the wall?

In most cases however the cables are connected to the DVD player, cable box and the like placed about 2-3 feet below the Flat screen TV. The devices are generally housed in a cabinet with the power socket located behind the cabinet panel. If there is no pre-existing socket you may have to get one installed.

You will need a knife, wall sockets, cables and of course nuts and bolts along with a turn screw. Use a marker to outline a square at the top behind the TV wall mounting bracket and another one just below it behind the cable box and DVD player cabinet. Then cut the outlined space using the knife or use a drill and run the TV cables downwards.

Connect them at both ends to the power sockets which you have affixed to the wall and you are good to go. The last part would be to connect all plugs in their socket, switch on the power and then sit back and relax watching your favorite show or movie.

Eliminating that Terrible Hum From Your Home Theater Speakers

You've all heard it, that dreaded 60Hz hum through the speakers of a home theater or house audio system. Hopefully you heard it at a friend's house and not your own. It can drive you completely nuts. You may have even tried, unsuccessfully, to fix the little noise problem. That can make you even more crazy. What causes that horrendous noise through your speakers?

More often than not humming through your speakers is caused by a grounding problem. There are three main ground problems that cause problems in an audio / video system. These are ground loops, improper grounding and lack of a ground altogether. The other possible culprits that can cause noise are bad cables, a faulty piece of equipment or electrical noise from a lighting dimmer or electric motor. There are steps you can take to troubleshoot the noise and eliminate it from you theater.

HDMI Cable

The first step is find out where it is coming from. Disconnect your source and display equipment from your receiver or surround sound processor. If the noise stops, connect them back to the receiver or processor on at a time until the noise returns. When the hum comes back, you found where the noise is entering your system. Note that if you are connecting remote equipment, such as running the signal from your theater room DVD player to the TV in the bedroom, your chances to pick up noise increase dramatically. With such long runs, noise can be induced into the long cable runs from adjacent electrical wiring. It is also easy to create a ground loop, because the equipment is plugged into two different, widely separated outlets, on different electrical circuits.

If the noise is caused by a cable box, the noise is likely caused by the cable TV ground. To test this theory, disconnect the incoming cable TV feed to the rear of the cable box or TV while they are still connected to the rest of the system. If the noise is eliminated by disconnecting the TV cable, the problem is the cable TV ground. You can electrically decouple the cable TV feed from your system with a ground breaking transformer. These are available from many sources. Be advised that many newer, digital cable TV systems require any device in the signal chain to pass a full 1,000 Mhz. Some of the older ground break transformers will not do this. Be sure to check the specifications of whatever device you are purchasing to verify it will pass the digital cable TV signal.

If the noise is from your projector, TV, or monitor, it is most likely caused because the video display device is plugged into a different outlet than the other a/v equipment. It could be on a different circuit as well. These circuits may have two different ground potentials. That is, the resistance to ground is different on each circuit. A difference in resistance to ground from one ground point to another can cause the dreaded ground loop. If you get a ground loop, current flows between the two components. If the current flows through the components internal audio signal ground, you will get a hum.

You can use an isolation transformer, similar to the type used for cable TV ground problems, to eliminate the electrical connection from one component to the other. These transformers are inserted in line with the audio signal connection between the two components. If there is no audio connection between the components, the problem may be current flowing through the video portion. In this case, a video isolation transformer should be used to eliminate the ground loop.

Sometimes power conditioners will stop noise problems by placing equipment on different, electrically isolated outlets. This is done using isolation transformers. Sometimes this is ineffective however, due to the differences in internal construction of different power conditioning equipment. Some safety regulations, such as UL 1950, specify that an isolation transformer is only allowed to isolate the hot and neutral wires; the grounding wire must be passed straight through. If this is the case, the ground loop problem may still exist because many communication circuits are connected to the grounding conductor and not the neutral. In this case, the isolation transformer, or any power conditioner or UPS with an isolation transformer will have absolutely no affect on the grounding problem.

The noise may be generated externally, from a dimmer or refrigerator compressor for example, and coming in through the main power input on the audio video equipment. In this case, a high quality power conditioner may be effective in reducing or eliminating the noise problem. You may also find that one of the signal interconnecting cables in your system is faulty. This can also cause noise problems. Check for this by swapping the cables with one that you know to be good.

You can solve most noise problems in your home theater or multi room audio/video system by taking the systematic, step-by-step approach. Work your way up the signal chain, eliminating each piece of equipment as you go. If you have nothing connected to your speakers except the speaker wiring, and they still hum, the problem is noise induced into the speaker wiring from adjacent power cables. Other than that case, most problems are caused by ground problems, which you can find, and solve, if you take it one step at a time.
